£34m Ederson bracing himself to battle revitalised Bravo for City starting spot

Date Posted,July 11, 2017

Ederson has warned Claudio Bravo he faces a fight for the No 1 spot at Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola splashed out £34.7million to land Ederson from Portuguese side Benfica and the Brazilian understandably intends to become the Blues ’ first-choice goalkeeper.

Bravo performed well at the Confederations Cup with Chile this summer after a difficult first season in England and says he’s up for the scrap.

So is Ederson.

“I sure am,” he said. “I’m happy for him, that he had a good tournament. It was good for him coming off the back of a season that wasn’t so easy. It will help him regain some of the confidence that he might have lost last year.

“Everyone knows that he’s an excellent goalkeeper, but I hope he realises he’s going to have some stiff competition for the shirt.”

Ederson, 23, is the world’s second-most expensive goalkeeper ever in euros, after Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon. But he insists he is not bothered by his hefty price-tag.

“It’s just a number,” he said. “Many friends have said to me ‘how does it feel to be the second-most expensive keeper in history?’. I feel completely normal.

“Going for one euro or for 40million euros makes no difference to me. The responsibility increases, but I’m ready for that. It’s not going to affect my concentration.”

Ederson began training with his new City team-mates this week and says he is ready for the physical challenge of the Premier League.

He also claims he will continue to play the ball with his feet, even if it means taking risks.

“With a bigger club comes bigger responsibility,” said Ederson. “The pressure will be much higher, but I’m going to have to take a risk from time to time to hit the target. When I’m playing it will always be like this.

“I hope to put in a good shift and reach the same heights of success I tasted with Benfica.”
