Contrary to reports, the Reds have NOT yet made any formal bid for the Monaco teenager, but they HAVE registered an interest with his club Monaco.
And the Anfield club are determined to be in there pitching if the player decides he will consider the Premier League as a plausible option, as his French club softens their stance on his departure.
Reports in France suggst Mbappe has already had conversations with Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and Arsene Wenger, with the Arsenal boss making clear the Emirates would be the perfect place to continue his development.
Now Liverpool also want to be part of that equation, with the Reds making discreet representations that they would be interested in talking to Monaco if the player becomes available.
Monaco have been adamant they want to keep the France international, who has excited the interest of some of Europe’s biggest clubs despite having completed just a single full season at senior level.
The 18 year old scored 24 goals in 44 appearances in helping inspire Monaco to the Champions’ League semi final, and their owner Dmitry Rybolovlev had claimed his star asset would stay for at least another season.
But the forward has two years left on his current contract, and the Russian owner has recently conceded Mbappe will be left to decide his own future, with the eye-watering sums on offer perhaps the highest they will ever be.
While Rybolovlev has said “the market will decide” any price for the Frenchman, it is thought he will demand more than the €110m Manchester United paid for Paul Pogba in a world record transfer last summer.
That means the fee will rise towards £100m, and at that level, Madrid are clear favourites given their financial clout and the attraction playing under Zidane would hold for a French striker.
Real have recently been reported by the French media as floating a fee of around €100m, and there have been claims too that Arsenal indicated they were prepared to match that offer.
Liverpool are realistic in understanding they can’t compete with Madrid should Mbappe decide he wants to move to Spain, but if it comes down to a straight race between Arsenal and the Reds, then Klopp is determined to make a passionate pitch.
The Merseyside club completed a near £40m deal for Mohamed Salah last night, and are prepared to continue their big-spending summer by bringing in the big name players the manager wants.
