Arsenal consider coaching return for former goalkeeper Lehmann

Date Posted,July 2, 2017

Arsenal are interested in a third return to the club for Jens Lehmann as part of Arsene Wenger’s backroom shake-up.

Mirrorfootball revealed last week that ex-Crystal Palace and Newcastle coach Andy Woodman is set to take charge of Arsenal’s under-23s.

Gerry Peyton, the Gunners’ goalkeeping coach for the last 14 years, has signed a new deal.

But the club still want to bring back Lehmann, the Invincibles keeper who played in every game of the club’s unbeaten 2003-4 season, as a first-team coach.

The former Germany keeper, 47, also helped Arsenal to the 2005 FA Cup and the Champions League Final the following year.

Lehmann continues to be well regarded at the Emirates and still has the confidence of Wenger after coming out of retirement in 2011 to help the Arsenal boss out of an injury crisis.

It followed injuries to Wojciech Szczęsny, Łukasz Fabiański and Vito Mannone, leaving Wenger with only one fit senior keeper, Manuel Almunia.

As part of the current shake-up at the club, fitness coach Tony Colbert has been moved sideways while Australian Darren Burgess, has been brought in as Director of High Performance.
