Gabby Agbonlahor received a hero’s reception after returning to Aston Villa’s substitutes bench for the Second City derby.
There were loud cheers as Agbonlahor’s name was read out before the match against fierce rivals Birmingham City at Villa Park.
He was applauded by Villa fans in the North Stand as he warmed up down the Trinity Road touchline in the first half.
There were also chants of ‘Gabby, Gabby, Gabby, Gabby, Gabby Agbonlahor’ in tribute to the Brummie striker.
It was Agbonlahor’s first appearance in Villa’s matchday squad since he sustained a hamstring injury in training at the end of January.
The Agbonlahor of old was the scourge of Blues scoring in a series of derby victories for his boyhood club.
His first comeback of this season came with a lively cameo during the 1-1 Championship draw at St Andrew’s last October.
Agbonlahor is looking for his first goal since he scored in the 2-0 Premier League victory over Norwich City at Villa Park on February 6 last year.
