Barcelona fans will be worrying Pique’s latest Messi remarks could come back to haunt them

Date Posted,August 25, 2017

Barcelona fans will be understandably worried about Gerard Pique’s latest comments on their talisman Lionel Messi.

Well, if recent history is anything to go by, that is.

The Barca centre-back spoke to the press this week about the Argentine, who has yet to sign a contract extension at the Nou Camp.

Messi has verbally agreed to stay on at the Catalan club but as of right now he has failed to put pen to paper on the deal.

This means that in theory he could leave the club on a free as early as January, as his current deal, which contains a huge €250m release clause, expires in June.

Speaking at a publicity event, Pique attempted to calm everyone’s nerves a bit, by telling reporters: “Everyone has the right to sign when he wants.

“Let’s hope it’s as soon as possible. I’m not worried about his renewal because I know him and I know what he’s like. He loves the club more than anyone.”

His message is all well and good, but it might just have the opposite effect, given what he said (or wrote) prior to Neymar leaving.

In a now infamous Instagram post, the Spanish centre-back uploaded an image of himself and the Brazilian along with the caption: “He stays”.

This was also designed to calm the nerves of Barcelona fans worrying Neymar would sign for Paris Saint-Germain… and well, we all know how that one ended.

You can see why his latest comments could again potentially jinx the club.
