Championship round-up: Leeds back to winning ways and Norwich put 7 past Reading

Date Posted,April 7, 2017

Leeds United ended their poor run of form with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Preston to boost their play-off hopes.

Goals from Kemar Roofe, Pablo Hernandez and Souleymane Doukaka gave Garry Monk’s men their second win in six games as they maintained fifth place in the Championship table.

Their play-off rivals Reading suffered a day to forget though, going down 7-1 at Norwich. The Canaries netted six before half-time as Wes Hoolahan and Alex Pritchard both bagged braces.

Third-placed Huddersfield suffered a 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, while Newcastle spurned the opportunity to move ahead of Brighton at the top again, as they lost 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday.

The win for the Owls sees them hold on to the final play-off place, sitting two points ahead of Fulham, who beat Ipswich 2-1.

At the other end of the table, Wigan’s survival hopes were boosted by their 3-2 win over already-relegated Rotherham which moved them within three points of 22nd-placed Blackburn, who lost 2-0 at home to Barnsley.

The Latics and Rovers both have Bristol City in their sites, with the Robins beating an in-form Wolves side 3-1.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Derby at Birmingham and Cardiff against Brentford, while Burton and Aston Villa drew 1-1.
