The brand new Mirror Football podcast will be bringing you insight into the biggest talking points in football every week.
The first episode – which you can listen to on our audioboom page or in the player below – is hosted by our columnist Stan Collymore.
Stan was joined by top reporters Adrian Kajumba and Tom Hopkinson to discuss the merits of the transfer window’s biggest moves so far. One of the deals analysed by our crack team was Romelu Lukaku’s massive £75million move to Manchester United.
And, in a fine example of the sort of added insight the Mirror Football podcast will offer, our man Collymore revealed the details of a fascinating conversation he has been having on social media with Manchester United’s new £75million man, Romelu Lukaku. You can hear the full podcast here:
Collymore describes Lukaku as his “favourite player” and is clearly a huge fan of the Belgian.
The former Liverpool – who was once Britain’s most expensive player – believes the striker just needs to add some ‘spite’ to his game in order to become a truly top level player.
And that support for the former Everton man has seen Lukaku strike up a private friendship with Collymore on Twitter, through the site’s private messages.
“We’ve been chatting for a number of years now,” says Collymore, “since he was a youngster.”
“The first time I ever DM’d him [sent him a direct message] was after the 2013 Super Cup final, when he missed a penalty. He got absolute pelters from everyone – I think he got hung out to dry.
“He’s always followed me and said nice things, so [after he joined United], I sent him a DM saying, ‘Congratulations, big guy. Enjoy the step up to a huge club. Be aggressive, be greedy and be ruthless. It’s all there for you now.’
“He sent me a lovely message back, saying, ‘Thank you. I’ll give everything I’ve got every day and work as hard as I can. I’ve been waiting for this my whole life. Thank you for the message.’
“So he’s ready. He just needs to do it now.”
The 45 minute clip also features Collymore and our reporters discussing Liverpools desperate need for defenders, Arsenal’s same old problems and Pep Guardiola new ‘chequebook manager’ reputation.
