Spurs’ astute Argentinian boss is battling to make them champions in the coming season after going close to the Premier League title two years running.
Now, after a summer of attacks from Chelsea counterpart Antonio Conte, Pochettino has lobbed a hand-grenade straight back at Stamford Bridge.
He claims he has tried more than once to land Morata, but the Spaniard didn’t fancy taking on Kane for a place in the side.
That will stun Chelsea fans, who are expecting the expensive 24-year-old signed earleir this month from Spanish and European champions Real Madrid to shoot them to another title as a straight replacement for outcast Diego Costa.
Pochettino has been on Morata’s trail for two years, and the pair spoke before the player left Italian giants Juventus to rejoin Madrid last summer.
“Morata talked about me in the media he said, ‘Mauricio called me’. That was from the beginning — two years ago or more,” revealed the 45-year-old.
“When we spoke he said to me, ‘Why do you want me if you have Harry Kane?’.
“You know? If I go to try to sign a striker, they will all say, ‘Uh, gaffer. You want me for what? To be on the bench? Because it’s Harry Kane, I can’t compete with Harry Kane’ or [at other positions] Hugo Lloris or Christian Eriksen.
“It’s so difficult to convince good players to come and then be on the bench. Then the problems start.”
* Tottenham take on Juventus at Wembley in their final pre-season fixture on Saturday 5 August.
