Pep Guardiola made a special effort to congratulate Michael Carrick on his performance after the Manchester derby , the United midfielder has revealed.

Manchester City were held at the Etihad by the Red Devils in the goalless affair as the race for the top four tightens up.

The Spaniard was impressed by Carrick, who reciprocated the respect towards the manager of United’s bitter rivals.

“He said congratulations and well played. He’s obviously a terrific manager, he’s had success wherever he’s been and I have a lot of respect for him.”
