Pep Guardiola’s ruthless axing of Samir Nasri has got Manchester City’s squad running scared.
Nasri was ordered to train alone last year after reporting back to pre-season training overweight – and was then ditched to Seville on loan for the season.
And Sunday Mirror Sport understands that City’s players were warned before going away on their summer break that Guardiola expects them to be fighting fit when they return to duty next month.
Each player has been given strict weight parameters that must be adhered to.
And anyone who fails to tip the scales to Guardiola’s satisfaction will not be allowed to train with the first-team squad until the excess pounds have been shed.
Guardiola decided there was no way back fort Nasri.
And Yaya Toure’s decision to shed excess weight was a huge factor in the City manager’s decision to bring the Ivory Coast midfielder back into his squad after a fall-out with the player’s agent had been resolved.
City skipper Vincent Kompany has revealed that he will once again spend the summer working in the gym after another season ravaged by injury.
He said: “I’ll give myself a little bit of time to relax, because I need to, but then I’ll crack on and I’ll be ready for next season.
“I think the days of a footballer going on holiday for a month and having a right go at it are gone.”
Guardiola has spent the last year trying to educate his squad about their eating habits.
Players must have breakfast and lunch together and they are also required to refuel after matches by eating meals prepared by Guardiola’s favourite nutritionist Silvia Tremoleda.
The Catalan has been known throughout his coaching career as a control freak.
When he was at Barcelona, the club employed a team of private investigators to spy on players who were renowned for hitting the city’s nightspots.
High-profile stars like Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Deco were are sold because they refused to adhere to Guardiola’s strict regime.
And Gerard Pique was also put under surveillance when he started dating pop star Shakira.
