Heskey believes Leicester can win Champions League ahead of last eight

Date Posted,April 10, 2017

Emile Heskey is tipping his former club Leicester City to achieve an even bigger miracle this season and defy the odds once again to win the Champions League .

After achieving one of the biggest fairytale stories in the history of the game when they won the Premier League title, the Midlands club are now stealing the headlines once again as they prepare for a showdown clash with Atletico Madrid in the quarter finals of the Champions League.

Heskey, who started his career at Leicester and spent six memorable years with the Foxes, has no doubts that Craig Shakespeare’s side have the quality to compete with the biggest teams in Europe and can cause another major upset.

The former England striker is predicting a tight affair when Leicester play Atletico in the first leg at the Vicente Calderon Stadium on Wednesday night, but feels home advantage will be the crucial factor in the return leg and will be enough to see Leicester reach the last four.

Speaking on behalf of online betting site BetStars, Heskey said: “I think the first leg will be a tight and cagey affair away from home.

“But I definitely think Leicester have a good chance of scoring [with] the likes of Mahrez, Vardy, Gray, Albrighton. I think they’ve got more than enough firepower to get at least one goal against Atletico Madrid.

“I’m going for a 1-1 draw in the first leg, then Leicester can bring Atletico back to the King Power and put on a good display in front of a home crowd.

“I’m going to pick Mahrez for first goalscorer. With the ability that he has he will be able show [it] against a typical Spanish side which plays more fluent football, [so] I think he’ll relish this game as it suits the way he plays. He’s due a big performance.”

Heskey knows more than most the quality that Leicester possess in the squad having joined up with the team during their pre-season tour to America.

And the 39-year-old sees no reason why they cannot go all the way in the Champions League and re-write the history books once again.

Heskey added: “I wouldn’t bet against them, that’s for sure. They’ve shown time and time again over the last couple of seasons that they are capable of doing whatever they put their mind to, with some great performances to defy the odds.

“This is a tournament they’d really like to win so I think they could do it.

“It would be up there with winning the Premier League. I had the privilege of going on the pre-season tour to LA with the team.

“Americans traditionally aren’t too fond of ‘soccer’ as they call it, but everybody knew Leicester City, which is amazing! I think because of the story, winning the Champions League would definitely rival the league victory.

“Already this year Leicester have put themselves up against the best in Europe, who play in this competition year in and year out, teams who know and understand the competition well.”
