Everton went 1-0 ahead through Phil Jagielka and looked good value for a win before disaster struck for the Toffees in stoppage time.
As Luke Shaw fired a shot at goal in the hope of drawing level, Everton centre-back Ashley Williams reacted instinctively to try to prevent his side from conceding.
Unfortunately, in his moment of wild determination he stopped the shot with his hand and was rightfully sent off by referee Neil Swarbrick.
As Williams walked off the pitch he had a brief coming together with Lukaku, who appeared to ‘shhh’ him, which resulted in him getting criticised after the game.
Martin Keown accused him of undermining the Welshman while discussing the incident in the BT Sport studios.
“It’s a lack of respect and without that in the dressing room we have nothing,” said Keown in his post-match comments.
“He is the most experienced player, Ashley Williams, in terms of how long he’s played and he should be listening to him.”
“I wonder what was going on in that dressing room because I think there is bit of an undercurrent with Lukaku and Ashley Williams.
“And I saw moments on the pitch when Lukaku is saying [holds his finger to his mouth] ‘keep your mouth shut’.
“When he [Williams] gets sent off I would love to be in that dressing room to find out what’s happening.
“Ashley Williams played very well tonight and Lukaku, you have to understand, that brotherly love of ‘I’m doing my best for you’.”
The episode would have likely upset Toffees fans coming so soon after the Belgian announced he wants to play for a Champions League club.
Man United may not be quite that just yet, but Red Devils fans believe Lukaku’s chat with Pogba at the end of the game speaks volumes.
Many took to Twitter to voice their thoughts, some jokingly claiming the Belgian was asking his friend to put a good word in with Jose Mourinho.
One wrote: “Pogba begging Lukaku to come to United. Rightly so,” while another added: “Pogba recruiting Lukaku.” A third simply wrote: “Welcome to United Lukaku.”
Well, you can’t say United aren’t a confident bunch!
