Juventus boss Allegri declares: I did nothing to keep Pogba last summer

Date Posted,June 28, 2017

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri has revealed he ‘did nothing’ to try and keep Paul Pogba after Manchester United made a world record move to sign him last summer.

Allegri was lost for words when he was told how much United had offered for the French midfielder and knew he would not be able to say anything to keep the influential midfielder.

Pogba became the most expensive player on the planet following his £89million move to Old Trafford.

Allegri would have loved the chance to keep the talented midfielder with the Italian giants after he played a key role in helping Juventus reach the Champions League final back in 2015, but knew he was powerless to stop him making a lucrative switch into the Premier League.

Allegri, speaking on Sky, said: “I did nothing to keep Pogba, also because when the club told me the numbers…”

Despite a slow start to his career at Manchester United, Pogba finished the season in style and played a major role in helping Jose Mourinho’s side win the Europa League and secure Champions League football for next season.

Allegri has also discussed the major transformation in the Juventus team and says they have needed a major revamp after influential stars Carlos Tevez, Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal left the club.

He added: “Tevez and Pirlo made a choice, Vidal was a market opportunity that Juventus decided to exploit, along with me. The year after was different.

“All three years were different, the first year we just had to grow in Europe without disturbing anything.

“Then in the second year with 10 new players, the veterans didn’t recognise the dressing room, it took time to start again in a different way.

“I didn’t ask for [Gonzalo] Higuain, but I did give directions and I said it was necessary to improve.

“Pogba or Paulo Dybala? Dybala’s game is easier on the eye, but Pogba is extraordinary because he has physicality and technique.”
