Koscielny cleared to play for Arsenal vs Chelsea despite domestic suspension

Date Posted,August 1, 2017

Arsenal star Laurent Koscielny will be available for Arsene Wenger in Sunday’s Community Shield against Chelsea.

The French centre-back was given his marching orders in the final game of the Premier League campaign vs Everton, leading to a three-game ban.

While the 31-year-old served the first game of that suspension against the Blues in the FA Cup final, two more will carry over to this season.

The Community Shield was thought to count as one of those, but the FA have confirmed that they consider the game to be a friendly, meaning Koscielny will be free to play.

While Wenger will be delighted to have Koscielny available, it will mean he is unavailable for both the season opener against Leicester and the trip to Stoke a week later.

The same rule will therefore apply for Chelsea and Victor Moses, meaning Antonio Conte is free to use the Nigerian on Sunday, but will deprived of his right wing-back against Burnley.

Moses was given his marching orders at Wembley in the FA Cup final last season, but also started in the pre-season friendly last month, with the Blues winning 3-0.

Conte may well be tempted to select Willian, Cesar Azpilicueta or Antonio Rudiger in that role to experiment before the clash with the Clarets on August 12.
