La Liga fixtures day postponed after Spanish football chief is arrested

Date Posted,July 19, 2017

The release of next season’s La Liga fixture list has been delayed following the arrest of Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Angel Maria Villar.

The new season is due to start on the weekend of August 19, but preparations have been disrupted after a raid on RFEF offices in Madrid saw Villar, his son Gorka and a number of other officials arrested as part of an anti-corruption investigation.

The draw to decide next season’s schedule was due to take place on Thursday, but the federation have confirmed that three days of planned meetings in which the draw was due to happen have been postponed.

They would later confirm that the draw will now take place on Friday.

Real Madrid won last season’s La Liga title, finishing three points above Barcelona on their way to a domestic and Champions League double.

They will not however receive their trophy until the start of the new season.
