Lamela ruled out for the rest of the season as Spurs star faces hip surgery

Date Posted,March 29, 2017

Erik Lamela has vowed to return for Tottenham stronger than ever next season after having to miss the end of the season thanks to a hip operation.

The Argentina international, who arrived from Roma in a £30million deal four years ago, hasn’t played since October and has a hip injury that means he is unlikely to feature again this season.

He tweeted: “I have to have an operation. I tried everything to recover but unfortunately my hip is still not 100% so I can’t compete at the level I want to.

“I’ll face this challenge with a positive attitude and can’t wait to get back with the team and be stronger.

“Thanks everyone for your support!”

Spurs’ official Twitter account broke the news on Wednesday, tweeting: “Erik Lamela is to undergo surgery on his hip on Saturday. This will result in Erik returning to action next season.

“The Argentina international has undergone a comprehensive rehabilitation process following the injury in November.

“The player has achieved a good level of function, however he has been unable to reach the stage required to make a full return to training.

“Therefore, following ongoing extensive consultation with specialists, surgery has been agreed by all as the best course of action.”

Lamela managed 14 appearances before picking up the injury in October and scored twice including Tottenham’s first goal of the season in a 1-1 draw at Everton.

Meanwhile, Lamela – along with team-mate Moussa Sissoko has been targeted for a summer move to Italy.

The 25-year-old has been targeted by Inter Milan, who think they can land him for around £10million with two years left on his contract.
