The former Red Devils boss was watching the action from the stands of the Friends Arena as United ran out 2-0 winners.
The victory saw Mourinho maintain a trophy-winning tradition at Old Trafford perfected by Ferguson during his rein, as the Portuguese made it number 43.
The result also had extra significance as it was the first time United had ever lifted the Europa League trophy.
While on a personal level, Mourinho became the first manager in Red Devils history to win two cups – the EFL and Europa League – in his first season.
After the game Mourinho spoke to the man he is tasked with filling the shoes of, and revelled in his own success.
Speaking to Sky Italia, the Portuguese said: “I joked with Sir Alex, telling him I did some work for him.
“Because now we have all the European trophies and I won the only one he missed.”
Mourinho’s men took an early lead in a game they never looked like losing in Stockholm on Wednesday evening.
Paul Pogba broke the deadlock in 18 minutes with a deflected shot and the Red Devils looked good value for their lead going into the break.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan doubled their advantage after the restart with a cheeky flick from a Chris Smalling knock down.
The win ensures Man United will be playing in the Champions League next season.
