Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has been told he has every chance of establishing himself as the team’s first-choice left-back next season, after three difficult years at Old Trafford.
Injury, patchy form and questions over his commitment have undermined Shaw’s progress since his £27m move from Southampton to United in 2014, with Mourinho publicly calling him out several times last season.
But Mourinho is said to have told Shaw he continues to have faith in him and has challenged the 22-year-old, who missed the final three weeks of last season through injury, to show total focus and nail down the left-back slot.
Mourinho’s comments follow reports that he is watching Celtic full-back Kieran Tierney with a view to a £15m move.
Scotland international Tierney is highly regarded and United have been sending scouts to check on his progress.
His performance against England in June attracted glowing reviews.
