Ex-Manchester United captain Gary Neville has admitted he would rather have Diego Costa in his team than Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The pundit was speaking ahead of the clash at Old Trafford between Costa’s Chelsea and Ibrahimovic’s Manchester United, when he made the extraordinary claim.
Neville told Sky Sports, “‘You’d much rather have Costa at this stage in terms of the mobility but I think Zlatan will go down in his career as the overall better player.”
35-year-old Ibrahimovic has been in impressive form for United this season scoring 28 goals in all competitions, but despite his stellar season, Neville stated he would rather have Chelsea’s 22-goal Costa.
“There are suggestions in the last few weeks that he [Ibrahimovic] is a little bit more tired, less mobile, he’s maybe slowing the team down a little bit. I wouldn’t say he is because without him this season, I think they’ve lacked personality.
“He dragged them through the [EFL] Cup final and if United’s season is going to be a successful one, it’ll be if they can get into the top four or win the Europa League and he’ll be the cause of that.
“Great player, he’s done great things this season but you would have Costa – he’s been unbelievable this season.”
Ibrahimovic is yet to sign a new contract at Old Trafford, and with his current deal running out in the summer, Neville feels it is a situation that must be addressed quickly.
“I just think at this stage in his career there’s talk of him now, whether he’s going to stay at United next season.
“United are going to have to deal with that situation, immediately. To replace his goals next season has got to be an immediate concern for Jose Mourinho.
“They aren’t scoring enough as it is, if you take his goals out if he was to leave it would be a really appalling situation.”
