PLAYER RATINGS Hazard puts on a show for Chelsea against sorry Saints

Date Posted,April 24, 2017

The Premier League looks all but wrapped up after Chelsea’s demolition of Southampton on Tuesday night.

Diego Costa claimed two goals after setting up Eden Hazard for the opener and Gary Cahill nipped in front of his attempt at a bicycle to head home the second.

His third saw the Blues swagger like they were celebrating the title already, with the Brazilian’s two one-twos splitting the Saints’ defence before his millimetre perfect finish.

Andy Dunn was at Stamford Bridge and rates the players’ performances.

CHELSEA

Courtois 6

No glaring errors but a general anxiety about his work

Azpilicueta 5

Uncharacteristically all at sea on occasions, neither calm or assured

Luiz 7

Back to his adventurous if somewhat unpredictable self

Cahill 6

Early shakiness shaken off by the crucial second goal

Moses 6

Conjured up that modern-day rarity, a foul throw-in

Alonso 7

Was more potent from set-pieces than he was on the flank

Kante 6

Booked. A few moments but the Player of the Year was not at his best

Matic 7

Eventually got a firm foothold in midfield, always influential

Fabregas 7

Booked. Nice pass in build-up to opener, always probing, always intelligent

Hazard 7

A cool finish and the most accomplished performer on the park

Costa 8

Cumbersome, annoying, pretty slow but, somehow, still very effective for his brace

SOUTHAMPTON

Forster 6

Unhappy with the protection early on and rightly so

Soares 6

His pace was tested on several occasions but hardly let him down

Stephens 6

Like so many, relished the physical confrontation with Costa

Yoshida 5

Idling for Chelsea’s opening goal but he was not alone there

Bertrand 5

Not defensively committed but a danger when going forward

Romeu 6

Booked. A sweet goal back at the Bridge but a struggle overall

Davis 7

Another solid performance, mixing it well against a stellar midfield

Ward-Prowse 6

Couple of flicks went wrong but enjoyed showing his passing range

Tadic 7

Elegantly instrumental in most of his team’s attacking moments

Boufal 7

Thoroughly enjoyed himself and caused a few problems

Gabbiadini 6

Has that happy knack of finding space in crowded penalty area
