Former Tottenham and England star David Bentley has slammed Arsenal duo Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil and says they only ‘care about themselves’.
Arsene Wenger’s future as Gunners boss continues to dominate the headlines following a dismal run of form which has seen them crash out of the Champions League in embarrassing fashion and are in grave danger of missing out on a top four finish.
A large section of the Arsenal fans have shown their anger towards Wenger in recent weeks and have staged protests for calling him to resign.
But Bentley, who started his career at Arsenal under Wenger, feels the Frenchman has been badly let down by key players in his team and feels Sanchez and Ozil in particular, have got a lot to answer for.
Bentley, speaking exclusively to 888sport, said: “Walcott, Wilshere and Oxlade-Chamberlain have played an awful lot of games yet you still feel they are young players, you feel they still need someone around them.
“Instead they have Ozil and Sanchez and they’re players who concentrate only on themselves. They’re not worried about whether the training ground atmosphere is good or what it’s like in the dressing room or if the young players are okay.
“They only care about themselves because they are players of that nature. That’s fine – you do need those players in a team – but what Arsenal are lacking is leadership.”
“I’ve been in dressing rooms where you come in and experienced players are punching the walls and throwing things and saying ‘what were you doing? Why didn’t you pick that runner up?’ to the young lads.
“I don’t think that’s happening and I should imagine the dressing room after losing 3-1 away at West Brom had players with their heads down and looking to get out of there as early as possible.
“They move on too quickly and it’s having an effect on Arsenal which is a shame because it’s a great club.”
Speculation continues to mount over the long-term futures of Sanchez and Ozil.
Sanchez has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea, while Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is believed to be a big admirer of Ozil.
Despite their importance to the club, Bentley feels they are not irreplaceable and the Gunners could actually benefit from them leaving during the summer.
Bentley added: “I don’t think any player is worth what people say they are unless they’re a great ambassador for the club. Sanchez and Ozil aren’t great ambassadors for their club and they don’t offer the full make-up of their importance as great footballers.
“Do they do tremendous work in the community and are they great with fans and are they loyal? Are they the Paul Scholes or Roy Keane of Arsenal? I don’t think that’s the case. They’re just good footballers.
Arsene Wenger responds to possible Alexis Sanchez move to Chelsea
“So are Sanchez and Ozil important to their club? No, and Arsenal shouldn’t bend over to keep them. There are plenty of great footballers around the world to get.
“Just go online and there are loads of lads from South America running past a hundred players and banging it in the top corner. There are others with their skill.
“To be honest they’ve become Mr Wenger’s allies, his friends within the team and Ozil and Sanchez have let their manager down because some of their behaviour is quite stupid.”
“You see Ozil and he’s a great player but he’s also the kind of player that’s in youth teams. He won’t run back, he looks unbelievable for a few games but then the big game comes around and he’s nowhere to be seen.
“The youngsters at Arsenal will be seeing that and thinking ‘well he’s not doing it so why should I?’”
