United players return to Carrington ahead of pre-season tour to America

Date Posted,July 8, 2017

Manchester United players are making their way back to the club’s Carrington training ground for medicals ahead of their pre-season tour to LA.

Most of the Red Devils squad arrived at the complex on Saturday for check-ups before they fly out to California alongside boss Jose Mourinho on Sunday.

But a few players have already touched down on the west coast of America, where they will compete in five pre-season games, reports the Manchester Evening News.

South Americans Andreas Pereira and Antonio Valencia were granted permission to fly to America separately, while Paul Pogba has been holidaying in the West Coast.

Pogba has spent the last fortnight with Romelu Lukaku, who is expected to complete his £75million transfer to United by the end of the weekend.

Daley Blind posted a photo of United’s training ground on Saturday morning and Ander Herrera informed his Instagram followers he was returning to Manchester from Spain on Friday.

Meanwhile, Chris Smalling’s wife confirmed the centre half would be travelling across the Atlantic amid uncertainty over his United future. Victor Lindelof’s arrival has plunged Smalling’s United career in jeopardy and recently switched agents.

United captain Wayne Rooney is not expected to fly abroad after he agreed to rejoin boyhood club Everton. Mourinho refuses to consider players for selection while they are attempting to complete a transfer, having sidelined Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis prior to their January moves.

Sam Johnstone might also remain in the UK after Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce confirmed he hoped to sign the 24-year-old goalkeeper.

“We hope to be able to announce something in the next 24 to 48 hours if we can. That would be ideal,” Bruce said. “It’s no big secret that I am still hoping we can tie up Sam Johnstone from Manchester United.

“I think that’s still ongoing but ultimately we have to respect Manchester United. I know they go on tour on Sunday. We will see what develops in the next 24 or 48 hours.”

Joel Pereira is expected to provide back-up for David de Gea and Sergio Romero in the States and possibly next season.

Johnstone’s brother, Max, and fellow custodian Kieran O’Hara have travelled to Austria with United’s Reserves and Dean Henderson was photographed training with the Reserves earlier in the week.
