United star Pogba backs Donnarumma after AC Milan keeper’s contract decision

Date Posted,June 19, 2017

Paul Pogba says Gianluigi Donnarumma will be the world’s best goalkeeper – and has hit out at those who have taken fire at the young Italian after he decided not to renew his contract with AC Milan.

The 18-year-old has come in for criticism after the Rossoneri revealed he had rejected a contract worth £80,000-a-week at San Siro to extend his deal with Milan, even being pelted with fake dollars by Italy supporters during the European Under-21 Championships in Poland.

French international Pogba shares an agent with Donnarumma – Mino Raiola – and the Italian youngster has been linked with a switch to Manchester United – if David de Gea were to move on, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Conversely, the stopper’s decision has fuelled talk of a move to Real Madrid, with De Gea remaining at Old Trafford.

And Pogba believes the Italian has been unfairly treated – having been the centre of a summer-long transfer saga himself last year.

Originally from Naples, Donnarumma has spent four years at the San Siro and quickly established himself as the most exciting young goalkeeper in world football.

And Raiola has claimed that there was a sinister reason behind the teenager’s decision not to renew his contract at the San Siro.

“He was ready to sign a new contract, there were no doubts in his mind,” he told Sky Italia. “They forced us to abandon the negotiations because of the environment created around him.

“I take the responsibility. They forced us. It was Milan that lost Donnarumma. He said to me, ‘Honestly Mino, I don’t feel it is right to carry on negotiations when these people are insulting and threatening me and my family’.

“The situation had become too violent and hostile, so there was no way out. We were threatened. Donnarumma’s family was threatened, both with not playing anymore and threatened with death. You can’t keep a player by threatening him.

“Now there is a genuine risk he could miss a year. His quality makes that improbable, but this is already on the verge of bullying.”
