United stars Shaw and Young close to first team return following injury layoffs

Date Posted,August 17, 2017

Injured duo Luke Shaw and Ashley Young are very close to returning to the Manchester United first team, according to boss Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese provided a fitness update on his team ahead of their trip to Swansea in the second game week of the new Premier League season.

Mourinho will be without the English duo, but is confident they will be in contention for selection very soon, as they are set to return to competitive action next Monday.

“Everybody is fine,” said Mourinho. “The next week, on Monday, in the Under-23s game, Luke Shaw and Ashley Young are playing their first minutes of competition this season.

“It is like a pre-season match for them. But it is good news because, when they can play with the Under-23s, it is because the last week they trained with us all week so they are both coming [back].”

Manchester United kick-started the new Premier League campaign in sensational form, battering West Ham 4-0 on the opening day.

But Mourinho is reluctant to suggest his side are early favourites for the title.

“We’re not favourites, we’re not the dream team, we’re just a team with more confidence than last season, with more time of work together, but I’m calm,” explained the Red Devils boss.

“But this is just the beginning. Last season we played three matches, had nine points and finished sixth.”
