Vertonghen escapes FA charge over clash with Rodriguez in Spurs win – but still misses Watford

Date Posted,December 29, 2016

Jan Vertonghen has escaped an FA charge over his clash with Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez.

The Spurs defender is already suspended for Sunday’s trip to Watford after picking up a fifth yellow card on Wednesday night.

But he had faced the prospect of a longer ban after TV pictures appeared to show him scratching Rodriguez in the face during Tottenham’s 4-1 win.

The incident was missed by referee Mike Dean but referred by the FA to a three-man independent panel.

That panel failed to agree that the clash constituted a sending-off offence and Vertonghen was cleared.

It means he will be available for next Wednesday night’s crucial game at home to Chelsea.
