Wright urges Arsenal owner Kroenke to take leaf out of Abramovich’s book

Date Posted,May 21, 2017

Ian Wright has called on the Arsenal board to take a leaf out of Roman Abramovich’s book and show some support for boss Arsene Wenger.

The Frenchman is yet to confirm if he will leave the Emirates with a decision to be made after next weekend’s FA Cup final.

Sunday’s win over Everton wasn’t enough for Arsenal to finish in the top four with the Gunners set to start next season in the Europa League.

During the clash, fans turned on majority shareholder Stan Kroenke , urging the American to sell up after he rejected a £1bn takeover offer Alisher Usmanov.

Kroenke isn’t expected to depart anytime soon and former striker Wright believes he must back Wenger, if he is staying.

“It is so unstable at the moment. The boss looks very despondent. He is out on his own,” Wright said on Match of the Day.

“They are protesting against the owner {Stan Kroenke] but his silence is deafening.

“Abramovich is silent but he puts his money where his mouth isn’t. That’s what Arsenal fans would like from Stan Kroenke, to start backing the club and the team.”

Asked if he thought Wenger should walk away, Wright insisted he should simply be “backed more” by the Emirates board.

The Frenchman is expected to sign a new deal but fellow pundit Alan Shearer believes the uncertainty over his future has been a problem for Arsenal this season.

“You have to think what has been going on in the last three or four months has hindered the club with the uncertainty about his future,” he added.

“Maybe there is a reason why he hasn’t announced it but it hasn’t helped at all.

“Other clubs have now taken over Arsenal. They have stood still while other clubs have spent big.”
