Mourinho and FA on collision course over Rashford playing for England U21s

Date Posted,May 2, 2017

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is on a collision course with the FA over their plans for Marcus Rashford.

English football’s governing body are keen for the the Red Devils’ hitman to lead the line for England Under-21s at this summer’s European Championships.

Mourinho doesn’t want Rashford to link up with the Young Lions for the tournament in Poland. Having seen the striker go to Euro 2016 with the seniors last year, the Portuguese is keen for Rashford to get a summer break.

Rashford has only played once for the Under-21s, scoring a hat-trick and Mourinho sees little point in the 19-year-old dropping down.

“I don’t want to go in that direction,” said Mourinho last month. “I just feel that when a player reaches a certain level, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to drop levels.

“It’s like now I’m going to play him in the Under-23s to win, let’s say, a derby against Man City? Would I do that? No.

“I think when you reach a certain level, and you reach that level for a long time, I don’t think it makes sense, but the power is in their hands.”

However, Aidy Boothroyd wants to take his strongest possible squad for the tournament, with Rashford his first choice front man.

Rashford has made 45 appearances for United this term, his first full campaign at senior level, scoring 10 goals.

England head coach Gareth Southgate would like Rashford to get more tournament experience, ahead of next year’s World Cup finals – where Rashford is certain, bar injury, to be with the seniors.

That would mean no break for the player in any of his first three summers as a member of United’s senior squad.
