Manchester United can feel slightly more confident in their quest to retain the services of David de Gea , after he failed to top a Real Madrid fans poll of who should be the clubs next marquee signing.
De Gea has consistently been linked with a move to the Spanish giants thanks to his impressive displays at Old Trafford.
And the rumour mill is in full swing again as the season draws to a close, as Manchester Evening News reports that Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is reportedly on the look out for a new goalkeeper.
And with De Gea’s fellow Real target Thibaut Courtois seemingly preferring to stay at Chelsea, Reds chiefs are braced for another approach.
But they may take some comfort in the fact that the Madrid fans do not appear to want De Gea as much as their United counterparts want to keep him.
Influential Spanish publication Marca polled readers on who they would want most want to see signed in the summer – and De Gea was down the pecking order.
He came in, with only 15% of the vote, behind Juventus’ Paulo Dybala (26%), Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Borussia Dortmund (both 16%).
With Monaco prospect Kylian Mbappe getting 12%, it means 85% of Real supporters polled would prefer someone other than the United No.1.
Food for thought for Real president Florentino Perez, who was voted in – and potentially out – by fans.
