Southgate’s England are crying out for Carroll, says former Hammers striker Ashton

Date Posted,March 26, 2017

Former England striker Dean Ashton believes Gareth Southgate should turn his attentions back to West Ham striker Andy Carroll and feels he could have a made a big difference against Lithuania on Sunday.

Southgate was pleased to see his side come away with a 2-0 win at Wembley, but feels they were not at their best and lacked the cutting edge to come away with a far superior victory.

Carroll was strongly tipped for a recall to the squad following his impressive form four the Hammers this season, but was overlooked as the England boss opted to recall veteran forward Jermain Defoe.

But Ashton feels the West Ham striker could have made a big difference during the game on Sunday and offers something completely different to what Southgate has currently got available to him in the squad.

Ashton, speaking on his Twitter site, said: “Still feel games like this are screaming out for Andy Carroll.

“Space wide, Time to deliver, Someone to attack it! No shame in that!”

England’s next game is the big derby against Scotland on June 10 and Carroll could earn a recall if he enjoys a successful end to the campaign.
